HAIR, HAIR, HAIR, MY HAIR! [Sunday
April 19th, at 1:07am]
Opening night was fantastic. Tonight was wonderful as well. Having people in the audience come up and dance with us at the end when we reprise "Let the Sunshine In" after the curtain call is fucking amazing and fantastic. I held my hand out to one guy, and he didn't look like he wanted to come, but then he did, and was clapping with us and smiling widely and his eyes were shining and there were people singing along with us--and oh, I am so proud of this fucking show man. If any of you are in the L.A. area, we're running a matinee performance tomorrw, and then running next weekend as well. Plus, I've decided to do the nudity tomorrow! I had this horrible feeling leaving the stage and not being a part of that scene, because it's such a beautiful and powerful moment in the play. And I don't want to look back ten years from now and regret not doing it, at least once. So, naked me tomorrow! *starts freaking out*

I also realize that after tomorrow's performance, I have tech for Anna Leath until midnight....goddamnit, why the hell am I in two shows at the same time? *looks grumpily at reflection in mirror*

Watchmen, play, other play [Sunday
April 12th, at 11:24pm]
Finished reading Watchmen during tech. Bit annoyed that my favorite character dies. Though, I suppose that's the point. You can't have a black and white world; there needs to be compromise. One person sacrificed for utopia. One and several million actually, but who's counting? Still. I was impressed mostly but the overwhelming magnitude of the complicated plot structures. I particularly enjoyed the pirate comic within the graphic novel itself; a man destroying the very thing he meant to save, driven mad by love and desperation. Fascinating. Completely and utterly fascinating. The alien thing bugged the crap out of me. Though, Veidt's speech was particularly entertaining, especially his declaration of success 35 minutes before anyone could stop him anyways. I found Dan and Laurie kind of annoying, actually. Jon reminds me of Boethius; long view of the universe and all that. The Comedian anoter fascinating character study. Really, the most interesting characters are the morally skewed ones, even with Rorschach being completely moral to a fault. Very Old Testament really; an eye for an eye. Enjoyable, entertaining, but I don't see why it's considered the greatest graphic novel ever written. It's complexity is astonishing and I enjoy the bleak outlook many of the characteres maintain--but my mind wasn't blown. Perhaps expectations were raised too high. *shrug* Good, great, not a fucking miracle.

Worked on the play. Managed to rewrite one scene and clean up a lot of the language. One more scene that really needs to be fixed; everything after that is change when considering it's due in 48 hours. My feelings on the main story and characters change with every pass at the draft. It's weird how quickly the imagination works to completely disintegrate one idea and substitute it with another. Hopefully, it works out. Expectations and all that.

The show opens Friday. Holy crap and a half. So much time and effort and there is the culmination, looming ahead. We're actually pretty far in tech; should be finished by tomorrow evening. And then the last show of this calibre I'll be doing will start, and then inevitably end. That's the way things go. But really, I don't think there is an end. We only think there is. I don't know, now I'm getting all existential and shit. Ah. Back to playwriting.

HUH??? [Monday
January 26th, at 4:39pm]
I was just cast in BOTH mainstages: HAIR and ANNA LEATH (Jon's adaptation of 'The Reef'). May I just say:

What the fuck??!!!??

My mind is confused. What just happened?

Second thought:

Holy shit, I am not going to have one free evening during my last semester. Sweet Zeus.

Happy new year everyone! I hope you all enjoyed the night/morning's festivities. I for one, spent it at home, and fell asleep before midnight. Though, I am sick, so that might be why....I watched the ball drop in NYC at 9:00 pm (go Pacific time!), ate some tasty food with the family, and then watched some pointless television with my mother until exhaustion finally took hold. I think I'm really going to miss being able to be lazy on holidays when my mother won't be around doing everything for everyone and refusing to accept any help, god bless her.

We're supposed to go for lunch today with some of my mother's friends that are visiting---the only problem with living in Vegas, is that everyone comes to visit! Which is lovely at first, but then it gets annoying. We were actually supposed to have lunch with some friends of my father, whom I actually like, but they're not going to make it because they're sick too! I think I'll starting chugging Emergen-C everyday from now on, because this getting sick every month in the winter bullshit is getting old.

If anyone is interested, hds_beltane, put on by the lovely twistedm, is currently taking sign ups, and only 31! So, if you're interested, go read the fest rules and sign up, because it's loads of fun, and is actually the only fest I participate in (because I'm too scared to do any others, and twistedm is just really, really nice). So, that's what I'll be working on this spring, a fic for the fest. I'll also be finishing one of the plot bunnies that I worked on for last year's fest, but didn't submit because it wasn't what my recipient requested. Oh, writing. I think writing a full-length play for my theater comps might kill me, but then, I thought honors would do the same, and that turned out great, so. I'll just shut up and stop the pointless complaining.

New Year's resolutions are to improve my writing, get healthy, work on this new relationship with Max, spend more time with my friends, and try and pull some patience out from somewhere. Cheers everyone, and a happy new year, love and health to you all! =)

so, my life in the past 72 hours.

rehearsal. rehearsal. more rehearsal.

getting sick. goddamnit, I hate being sick. this also means that I didn't eat anything all day until I dragged myself out of bed right before the Fantastiprov show and managed to nibble on some chicken before heading over to the show. because I already missed the first one and my friends would kill me if I had missed that one. plus, some lovely people I hadn't seen in a long time were there, spreading their hilariousness around with joy.

still currently sick. just got back into bed, where I have armed myself with trashy magazines, cup of noodles, gatorade, and dayquil. though, technically I'm supposed to go halloween costume shopping, watch a movie with a friend, attend a documentary party, attend some other party, because I left early last night since I was sick. though, Eric walked me home, which was very nice of him. I just found out that he was one of the top 3 choices of actor to play Fogle on "Superbad." I kid you not. he went in and did screen tests with Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill and Michael Cera and everything. all I can think is, wow. that's pretty awesome.

I need to watch Vertigo. read/listen to Passions. research Georgian etiquette. read Nancy books (of which there are 3, and French theory takes a lot out of a person). do close readings and analyses of odes. write up an honors thesis. read Song of Solomon. not die from the influenza. oh my head....

but mostly, I just want to sleep.

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Strike out the books you have no intention of ever reading, or were forced to read and hated.
5) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them.

[Tuesday
August 12th, at 12:30am]
I've been deprived of the internet for almost two weeks, but it was so totally worth it!!

The conference went fine, and despite skipping over a good third of the details of my thesis because even with theater I apparently don't do public speaking well, I'm proud of what I accomplished this summer...and I think my superior is too, and that's probably more important for continuing the project. Yay for returning to Oxy in two weeks!

Anyhoo, I've been in Hawaii for the past week vacationing with my family. It was absolutely gorgeous, so green and blue!! The only downside was my damn Irish blood, which insured that I burned myself horribly the second day there, unlike my mother who only managed to just get tanner. But the sunburn is mostly healed, and it's good to be home. Amazingly enough, paradise can get a bit boring...especially without internet access. Though I really enjoyed rereading some books while hiding from the sun for a few days. I'd forgotten how much Dickens uses repetition in A Tale of Two Cities. Hah! Trust me to bring old British novels assigned to college students for my holiday reading material. I don't know where I get it from.

And now, off to see what has occurred in my absence!!!

haven't been on lj in forever. work consumes all. and then there's sleep, which is glorious. but then there are the few relaxing moments in between, and lj doesn't spring readily enough to mind, really. sorry to my wonderful friends, I promise to get to your posts and comment accordingly...most probably in the morning.

right, so I have to actually start writing since the conference is in about two and a half weeks. bugger all. need a thesis, a solid one, not the shimmering in the distance kind, which has been plaguing me for a few weeks now. stupid history of the world (not even, mostly just europe, actually, really just greece and italy and england) screwing me over with its vastness.

going to see the lost plays of tennessee williams at the coast playhouse tomorrow. or I guess technically this evening, since the night's gone and morning has already come. very excited, as it has gotten very good reviews.

got another friend hooked on QoM. tee hee hee. I love introducing people to the fandom. they look so wonderfully confused and exasperated at the same time, because of course this means that I will seldom talk about anything else, because else-wise I would have to talk about work, and I already do that for 8 hours a day. why would I want to do more? thus the late night procrastination with pointless but funny ipod memes. *sigh* hmm, I think I'm feeling in need of a Buffy fix....

meme stolen from jae.... [Friday
April 18th, at 11:29pm]
Just a bit of Friday night fun...

List ten fictional characters you wouldn't kick out of bed (in no particular order) and tag five people to do the same.

1. Han Solo, Star Wars (gotta agree with you, jae)
2. Batman/Bruce Wayne, Batman (preferably Christian Bale)
3. Aragorn, Lord of the Rings
4. Gambit, X-Men (yes, I realize it was a comic/cartoon...shut up)
5. Westley, The Princess Bride
6. Christian, Moulin Rouge
7. Spike, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
8. Mal, Firefly (I heart me some nathan fillion)
9. The Narrator/Tyler Durden, Fight Club (I will happily take either incarnation, Brad or Edward)
10. Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter (I count them as one. you can decide what that means for yourself)

That was actually harder to come up with than I thought it would be. Though, now that I've exhausted myself thinking of all the gorgeous fictional men in the universe, I have more characters in mind...

Ah, go tag yourselves you lazy bastards!

he chose the loeb.... [Friday
April 18th, at 10:52pm]
i was in borders with a friend on tuesday, standing by the magazine section, when a young boy and his mom are chatting nearby, because she's teasing him about the harvard lampoon's mock national geographic magazine. i notice that he's carrying a book. the odyssey. to be more specific, the fogles version of the odyssey...which i had to read in high school...and which, once i got to college and subsequently saw different editions, i realized that fogles is the worst thing to happen to greek literature since cowley completely mistranslated pindar. the translation is awful, and while the poety is pretty, it's completely removed from the original greek and the original meaning of the epic.

i cannot hold my tongue. i ask the boy if it's required reading. he says its not. he wants to have fun and likes to read. the mother inquires if there is a better edition i could recommend. my friend and i look at each other, and then spirit the young boy away to the literature section of borders and pick out a different, less sucky, edition. while we're up there, my friend shows the kid the amazing loeb editions of the classics, which has the original greek on one side and the most effective translations available on the other side. we show the first few lines of the loeb and have the kid compare it to the fogle. yeah. he gets it. but, since the loeb is intended for serious study and split into two volumes, it's like 4 times the price of the $12 edition we pick out for the kid, which is the best cheaper edition we find and what we think a 12 year old can handle. we walk away, but not that far and he trots downstairs to his mother.

about 20 seconds later the kid sneaks back up, keeping his eyes to the floor as he passes us, goes back to the proper section, and then heads out again a few moments later. i see a flash of green in his hand. he got the loeb editions! the boy snuck back and got the ridiculously hard editions, because we told him it was the best!!! my heart just about exploded and i had a grin on my face for the next hour with no other provocation. my friend and i were speechless; he was carrying the grin around too. when we walk down, we stop by the mom and kid, and just exclaim our glee over how smart that damn kid is. and how much of a challenge he's just given himself. though, he replied, well, i read the aeneid in four days, and i wanted something that would take longer. heh heh heh. they trot off and buy the editions.

whipppeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

wow. that kid made my day. =)

i am covered in bruises and look like someone kicked the shit out of me, and it is totally awesome! stage combat workshop has left me aching in places i'd forgot existed, but to hear people who have seen the exact same sequence several times before still ooh and ahh in the appropriate places when we napped correctly and the block was covered and i was flipped over my partner's back and slammed onto the mats.....yeah, that was pretty freaking sweet.

now i just have to figure out how to walk without hurting. damn, and i wanted to check out the beach tomorrow, too.

in other news, my fic for the beltane exchange is currently at 6,000+ words, and i've still got at the very minimum two-three scenes left before i even could consider the story to be complete, so that's lovely. and editing for a literary magazine is lots of fun, as always. i've always wondered what really, godawful, cliche ridden poetry sounded like...and now i know. in spades. though it is a bit hard to walk out of an hour long discussion of Eliot's The Wasteland and not be biased against people who might not be geniuses...yet, at any rate. still. i hold my opinion steadfast, and look towards tomorrow's session with hope and resignation. after all, i wouldn't want to have my optimism crushed by the cold, steel boot of mediocrity.

wow, i'm a harsh bitch when in pain.

snorkeling rocks. yay for colorful fish. especially of the parrot variety.
crazy uncles/aunts/cousins were highly entertaining, at least when not annoying
mother and i survived each other 24/7 for a whole week...holy shit...i admit it, the iPod was used as a barrier...as was sleep and the excuse of needing to tan...a lot...did you ever notice that no matter how tan you get, your hands are always ligther? or maybe it's just me...
raided the st. john sales rack...hell. yes.
was inspired for new ficcage, which helps because i just signed up for another round of Beltane exchange! yay for being required to express my creativity.
am now home, very tired, but very happy.
i love you all. i'll look at all your posts and comments, but first....sleep...
